Pedal to the Metal! Our Scalextric TradesFest Showdown at Howdens Southport

What happens when you combine the best tradespeople in Southport, a mountain of delicious Indian street food, and four hours of high-octane slot car racing?

You get an absolute smash hit!

Yesterday, we took our full Scalextric setup over to Howdens Southport to host the racing challenge as part of their fantastic TradesFest 2025 event. And let us tell you, the competitive spirit was running as fast as the cars!

A panoramic view of an elaborate, custom-built Scalextric slot car track. The track features red and white branded barriers with 'Howdens' logos, miniature scenic elements like trees and buildings, and a gantry advertising 'TradesFest 2025'. In the background, monitors show race timings and several controllers are racked, ready for use, all set within a commercial space.
Get a close-up look at the action! Our meticulously crafted Scalextric track, featuring custom Howdens barriers, buildings, and gantries, was the star attraction at the recent Howdens Southport TradesFest. With multiple controllers ready, it was an afternoon of competitive fun!

The Track, The Trades, and The Thrills

From the moment we flipped the power on, the atmosphere in the branch was electric. We had a steady stream of close to 100 people through the doors, transforming the Howdens showroom into a buzzing hub of speed and nostalgia.

The attendees were a great mix: Howdens staff, their loyal tradespeople, and even a few father-and-son duos all grabbing a controller. The atmosphere was a perfect blend of:

  • Nostalgia: Tradesmen stepping back in time, remembering their childhood tracks.

  • Family Fun: Parents showing their kids how it's done (or getting comprehensively beaten!).

  • Pure Competition: The dedicated few who decided nothing short of the track record would do.

Fuelled by Food, Focused on Speed

Big shout-out to the Tandoori Indian Street Food team, who kept everyone going with incredible free food! Nothing fuels a fast lap time like a hearty meal, and the energy from the crowd certainly proved it.

Our custom track, complete with Howdens branded barriers, buildings, and gantries, looked amazing and provided the perfect backdrop for the action. We ran a simple but intense Fastest Lap Competition, with six cars and controllers constantly spinning tyres for four solid hours.

There were crashes, near-misses, and plenty of celebratory fist pumps, but everyone was racing in good spirits.

The 5.32 Second Quest: A True Race of Endurance

Our track proved to be a tough nut to crack, requiring precision, patience, and perhaps a touch of obsession.

While many enjoyed a few casual laps, one competitor decided to make the track his personal mission. He came back again and again, refusing to be beaten. In a true test of endurance, this dedicated driver put in an estimated 500 laps over the course of the day!

His incredible effort paid off: the undisputed winning time of the day was an astonishing 5.32 seconds!

That's an incredible time, and a well-deserved victory. We hope the winner slept well after all that intense focus!

Thank You, Howdens Southport!

A massive thank you to the team at Howdens Southport for hosting us and for putting on such a successful and fun TradesFest event. It was a pleasure watching your staff and customers connect over the shared joy of a mini motor race.
